Kootenai Pets for Life Monthly Meeting Minutes for June 9, 2014

 

The meeting was held at 6PM at Mike & Gabe’s Restaurant on Hwy 2 in Libby. (The Community College was closed)

Attending: Eileen Carney, Tami White, Carol McAllister, Susan Bulyar, Bobby McCanse, Linda Rodriguez, Anita Beasley, Lynn Hagarty and Judy Hyslop.

Judy Hyslop read the minutes from the May 12th meeting at 6:15 PM (after people had an opportunity to order supper - if they wanted to. The minutes were approved as read.

In the absence of Connie Holthaus, Judy Hyslop took minutes and told of paying bills in the amount of $425.00 and 1 vet bill for June 3, 2014 in the amount of $610.00.

Tami White gave the shelter report. At the end of May, KPFL had 44 cats in the shelter (10 of which were kittens), 3 dogs in the Shelter and 2 dogs in foster. For May KPFL took in 24 animals 6 dogs and 18 cats (again, 10 were new kittens) and adopted out 11 animals (5 dogs and 6 cats).

Tami White talked about the 3 dogs that we took in from Panhandle Animal Shelter. 2 of those dogs have already been adopted and the 3rd one has several adopters interested.

Judy Hyslop reported that Dr. Disney was at the shelter on June 3rd and will be back again on June 20th. On June 24th, we will be taking cats to Flathead Spay Neuter Task Force and microchipping will be offered from 5-7 PM on June 24th.

The need for an emergency care waiver form was discussed. Tami White will develop the form and bring it to the board. It was also suggested that we create a “Returned to Owner†form similar to our “Release of Ownership†form to go into an animal’s folder. Tami White will also work on creating this form.

Several cats escaped from the shelter by tearing out a window screen. All animals that escaped were S/N. Tami White is working up a list o determine exactly who got out. Every effort is being made to recover the escaped cats and to correct the problem in the future.

There are 2 parades coming up. July 4th and Logger Days . We will participate if we have any dogs.

KPFL will be recycling at the Blues Festival and the Card Clinic event. We will also sell water at the Blues Festival.

There were 4 bids taken on the painting of the inside of the Shelter. Monte Lehew’s bid was chosen to do the job. Hopefully, the work can be started before the end of June.

The meeting was held at 6:00 pm at the Flathead Valley Community College

The reading of the minutes from the April 14th meeting began at 6:05 pm. The minutes were approved as read.

The bills for May totaled $1,256.96 in operating costs. The total of $2,551.47 was for vet bills, mileage and chipping. Judy Hyslop made a motion to pay the May bills and Beth Murray 2nd the motion. The motion passed and the bills will be paid.

Shelter Report:

Tami White gave the shelter report. There are no dogs in the shelter. Maverick was adopted. Adoptions 21, 6 intakes, adoptions 1 dog and 1 cat. There are 23 cats at the shelter including 10 kittens.

The new volunteer is a good worker.

KPFL may try to get a dog or two from the Panhandle Animal Shelter to adopt through Libby.

Dr. Disney will do a special spay/neuter on 5/12 as a community service. Dr. Disney will be at the shelter on 5/13, 5/30, 6/3 and 6/20. We will take cats to Kalispell s/n 5/20. Corinne Wright will do chipping 5/17 and 5/20.

KPFL also discussed tetnus shots for volunteers.

Family Fun Day in the park was a fun time. At the park from 12:00 – 3:00 pm. Good weather handed out lots of brochures and pet magazines and treats.

We completed the form for the Blues Festival; in August. Vicki Lawrence is the contact person for the festival.

Painting the interior of the shelter; contacted two painters for estimates. Bob Moore Painting and Fairchild Painting; we will discuss estimates and make a decision.

The meeting was held at 6:00 pm at the Flathead Valley Community College

The reading of the minutes from the March 10th meeting began at 6:05 pm. The minutes were approved as read.

The bills for April totaled $1,406.76 in operating costs. The total of $3,734.21 was for vet bills, mileage and chipping. Judy Hyslop made a motion to pay the April bills and Beth Murray 2nd the motion. The motion passed and the bills will be paid.

Correspondence:

A letter was read from Kootenai Kiwanis Family Day in the Park. The fun will begin on May 17th from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm at Fireman’s Park. KPFL will provide educational literature, our brochure and treats. We may even have pet from the shelter.

Shelter Report:

Tami White gave the shelter report. There are 28 cats in the shelter. There are 3 dogs in the shelter; Maverick and the two puppies; Lucy and Arlo (in foster). Gweeda was adopted from The Panhandle Animal shelter.

Dr. Disney will be at the shelter on 4/11, 4/15, 4/22 and 4/25.

Corrine Wright will do chipping at the shelter on April 15th.

Cats will go to Flathead on April the 22nd.

KPFL will try to have a cleaning day in the dog yards. Possibly on May 3rd.

Shelter Improvement envelope stuffing and pizza party began at 5:00pm. Those stuffing were Barb Booher, Susan Bulyar, Eileen Carney, Connie Holthuas, Judy Hyslop, Roxanne Parker, Linda Rodriguez, Edwina Smith and Tami White

New Business:

Barb Booher gave a presentation at 6:00 pm on a ban to trap animals for fur on public lands. This initiative was presented previously in 2010. Some groups think this will affect hunting. Fifty dogs (pets) were caught in traps in 2013. 25,000 signatures needed by June 20th to get this initiative on the ballot, Trap Free MT Public Lands. Barb will take names of those who wish to be involved getting signatures.

The reading of the minutes from the February 10th meeting began at 6:20 pm. The minutes were approved as read.

The bills for March totaled $1,879.82 in operating costs, including $84.00 for Post Office box rent; also $3,777.32 for vet bills, mileage and chipping . Carol McAllister made a motion to pay the March bills and Judy Hyslop 2nd the motion. The motion passed and the bills will be paid.

Correspondence:

A letter from The Cabinet Peaks Medical Center concerning the Health Fair on April 5th, at the Memorial Center, KPFL will be there with information and the new brochure and treats.

Shelter Report:

Tami White gave the shelter report; there are 3 dogs at the shelter and twenty five cats. There are three puppies in foster care. “Spud†from Sandpoint was adopted, “Cooper†having a good time in Missoula.

KPFL has a new WEX worker. Good worker.

Paul is still working at Bobbie’s.

We need to have a dog play yard cleaning day maybe a weekend in May.

Beth would like a cat day to check ears etc. need Corinne’s help.

Susan Bulyar will be gone in April. Have fun Susan!

We spay or neutered 69 animals in January.

Dr. Disney will be at the shelter on March 11th, 14th and 18th.

Cats will go to Flathead March 18th and Corrine will be at the shelter for micro chipping as well on the 18th from 5:00 – 7:00.

Guests: Kelly Cobb Crisis Center; for Barb Guthneck and Sarah Pisciotta Lincoln County

Bobby McCanse handed out the Protect the Pet Project pet intake form. Kelly Cobb stated that this need for animal rescue may happen once or twice a year. This rescue would be temporary. We also discussed the option of the spaying or neutering of the rescued pets. Carol McAllister made a motion to help the sheltering of pets for abused clients. Kim Annis 2nd the motion. Motion carried.

The reading of the minutes from the January 13th meeting began at 6:20 pm. The minutes were approved as read.

The bills for February totaled $3,668.47 in operating costs, including $640.00 for consulting and tax prep for Melissa Beck; also $3,273.00 for vet bills, mileage and chipping . Judy Hyslop made a motion to pay the January bills and Carol McAllister 2nd the motion. The motion passed and the bills will be paid.

Correspondence:

ACE Home Center sent a letter on February 1st , 2014 concerning the list of members who will be allowed to charge at ACE. All the members are current as of 2/28/14.

Shelter Report:

Tami White gave the shelter report; there are 5 dogs at the shelter. Scooby is doing well at the Ellsworths. Hunter is to be adopted as is Winslow. Dr. Disney will be at the shelter 2/7, 2/10, 2/21 and 3/3. Cats will go to Flathead 2/18 and Corinne will do chipping on 2/18 also. Kim Annis brought up the idea of a ½ door between the counter and wall; so we have no escapees. Ask Lorry Dotson to see about installing the ½ door.

KPFL has spayed or neutered 30 cats by the end of January; these were the ferals.

Rummage Sale February 28th (Friday) and March 1st (Saturday) 8:00 am at The Ponderosa Room to set up tables. 10:00 load up items from both storage units and accept rummage and treasures from the public. Sale will start at 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Anyone that is able to help set up please come. The sale will continue on Saturday at 1000 am; no early birds please. We will vacuum and clean up by 4:00 pm. Mary Anns from Troy will pick up excess.

Fund raising letter – topics: plumbing repairs, paint for shelter interior and hiring a painter to do the work and anything else that could be accomplished with funds from letter.

Elections at the March meeting; Judy Hyslop, Beth Murray and Linda Rodriguez were nominated to the board. Nominations ceased. Judy Hyslop made the motion to cease nominations and Bobby McCanse seconded. Motion was passed.

New Business:

Providing straw for dog houses: Bobby McCanse will contact Sarah Pisciotta about straw for outdoor dogs. We can get straw from Homesteaders a bale is about $6.00 . Maybe straw and heated bowls for water also. Carol McAllister made a motion to work with Sarah. Edwina Smith seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Fundraiser: Friends of the Shelter, Winter Warmer, 2/22/14 in Eureka. KPFL will pay for tickets.

Sweetie is going to Davenport, WA.

Dogs from California – Dog is my co-pilot. A gentleman from Merced, CA would bring dogs to Libby. They are not altered, don’t know if they are adoptable (socialized). KPFL said no to accepting the animals.

The bills for January totaled $1,430.99 in operating costs, including Lorry Dotson for work on new sliding window between shelter and surgery room; also $4,744.54 for vet bills, mileage and chipping . Carol McAllister made a motion to pay the January bills and Beth Murray 2nd the motion. The motion passed and the bills will be paid.

Correspondence:

The Sands Memorial Foundation awarded Kootenai Pets for Life a $5,000.00 grant for the feral cat spay/neuter program. The Sands Foundation also allows KPFL to assist low income individuals in spaying and neutering their pets.

Shelter Report:

Tami White gave the shelter report as of December 31, 2013. There is 1 dog in the shelter and three in foster care for a total of four dogs in the system. And 32 cats in the shelter and 1 cat in foster care for a total 33 cats in the system. The dog at the shelter; Maverick is being socialized by Kim Annis.

Dr. Disney will be at the shelter 1/10/14, 1/17/14, 1/24/14 and 1/31/14. Cats will go to Flathead on January 21st. Carol McAllister purchased 5 extra kennels from Homesteaders for the transport of cats to Flathead; KPFL received a$27.00 discount for this purchase. Corinne Wright will do chipping on January 18th ; Saturday.

Paul Bradt may be at the shelter this month. Shelter baffles could possibly be used between kennels.

Bobby McCanse brought a discussion concerning a proposed program to shelter pets in dangerous situations of domestic abuse. Contact person is Barb Guthneck. Also a program to provide assistance to pets left out of doors without shelter.

The reading of the minutes from the October 14th meeting began at 6:00 pm. The minutes were approved as read.

The bills for November $3,313.01 in operating costs that included insurance for the shelter. Also $3,211.81 for vet bills, mileage, and chipping. Judy Hyslop made a motion to pay the November bills and Beth Murray 2nd the motion. The motion passed and the bills will be paid.

Correspondence:

KPFL received a letter and a $500.00 grant towards the new autoclave sterilizer. This grant was received from the Lincoln County Community Foundation.

Kootenai Pets for Life also received a letter informing KPFL of the insurance bill totaling $1,260.00.

Shelter Report:

Tami White gave the shelter report. There were 21 intakes; 10 dogs and 11 cats. There were 17 adoptions; 8 cats, 7 dogs and 2 roosters. The total adoptions in 2013 were 31 dogs, 60 cats and 2 roosters; Lucien and Percy.

There are 7 dogs at the shelter and 29 cats.

KPFL is still looking for volunteers for the shelter. We discussed getting some community service clients to work at the shelter. There are two new cat room volunteers: Sarah and Bonnie.

Dr. Disney will be at the shelter on 11/26. Twenty five cats will go to Flathead o 11/19 and Corinne will do chipping also on the 9th. Dr. Disney will work at the shelter the 3rd and the 20th of December.

KPFL is still looking for someone to clean the shelter. The gentleman who cleans the Dome was contacted; his name is Alan Beach. Mr. Beach did not want to take the cleaning job. We are trying to get the dog area finished; maybe this winter.

Donna Parrish may have a fifteen year old volunteer for us. Tami will call. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed!

Kootenai Pets for Life applied for the grant from the Sands Foundation for feral cat spay and neuter. We asked for $5,000.00.

The rummage sale will be in February. KPFL will ask for a gift card from Rosaures, a quilt from the Troy Quilt Guild; contact Vicki Silcox. Beth Murray knows someone at ACE who may be able to get an item at cost. We do have the Ninja 3 in 1Cooking System donated by Bobby McCanse and Edwina Smith.

We want to try to have a radio spot with Eileen and Judy and Dwayne Williams to discuss the shelter, adoptions, spaying and neutering etc.

The bills for October totaled $3,035.18 in operating costs, Bow Wow Bash meal and hall rental; also $1,827.25 for vet bills, mileage, chipping and clipper repair. Tami White made a motion to pay the October bills and Marge Sullivan 2nd the motion. The motion passed and the bills will be paid.

Shelter Report:

Tami White gave the shelter report. There are 8 dogs and 22 cats in the shelter and three kittens in foster care. Titan was adopted and Griz travelled to Second Chance in Bonners and was adopted. Dr. Disney will be at the shelter on 10/4 and 10/22. Cats will travel to Flathead S/N 10/22. At this time there are 25 slots available.

Corrine Wright will be at the shelter 10/22 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm Corrine will also do chipping on Saturday 10/26 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.

KPFL is still looking into someone to clean the shelter. The gentleman who cleans the Dome was contacted; his name is Alan. He will tour the shelter and make a decision for us. Edwina did the painting on the kennel walls. Volunteers are always welcome!

Shelter Report:

  • Edwina Smith gave the shelter report.
  • There was an intake of one dog; Oakley and one cat.
  • There are 6 dogs in the shelter and 21 cats.
  • The age of volunteers was discussed. If a volunteer is 15 years and under they must be accompanied by an adult supervisor when working with the dogs. Edwina Smith made a motion to approve this rule and Linda Rodriguez-Newstrom 2nd the motion. The motion was passed.
  • Dr. Disney will be at the shelter 9/10, 9/20 and 9/27.
  • Cats will travel to Flathead S/N 9/24. At this time there are 20 slots available.
  • Corrine Wright will be at the shelter 9/24; Tuesday for chipping from 5:00 - 8:00 pm.
  • Update on the dog area. We are doing half of the shelter with enamel and go forward with the painting.
  • Fences, concrete strip under outdoor kennel and other maintenance discussed completing before winter. Discuss concrete slabs with Paul Bradt.
  • Ponderay shelter trip was reported on; use of Martingale collars, cloth against dogs throat. New buckets for the KPFL shelter were purchased at ACE. Use muzzles for management of dogs. Could people from the county or city institution be used for volunteers at the shelter? Spray bottles with water for discipline suggested. Ponderay mixes dry foods with other dry foods for interest. We don’t usually do this at the shelter but could be tried.
  • The screens in the cat area need to be replaced. Scooby – no more scooter running for him. He can be on a run line outside.
  • KPFL will have dogs in the parade for Nordic Fest. Make sure the banner is at the shelter for the parade.
  • We may look into transferring dogs to Second Chance in Bonners Ferry. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed.

New Business:

  • The Bow Wow Bash committee will go to the VFW meal on the 3rd Wednesday of September; at 5:00 pm. We want to check out the food.
  • The Boy Scouts have been contacted to wash dishes; at the VFW as the automatic dishwasher is out of commission. Kim Fox has been contacted to be a Vanna at the Bash.
  • The Lincoln County Community Foundation will be contacted for funding a grant for a newer autoclave for the surgery room.
  • KPFL is considering employing someone to deep clean the shelter monthly. Lynn Hagarty will look into the hiring of someone available in Libby.

Kootenai Pets for Life monthly minutes: August 12th, 2013

The reading of the minutes from the July 8th meeting began at 6:00 pm. The minutes were approved as read; with two corrections.

The bills for August totaled $1, 642.17 in operating costs and $1,445.00 for vet bills, mileage and chipping. Carol McAllister made a motion to pay the August bills and Tami White2nd the motion. The motion passed and the bills will be paid.

Shelter Report:

Tami White gave the shelter report.

There are 7 dogs in the shelter and twenty cats.

Paul Bradt is painting the cinder blocks, in the shelter, with two coats of paint. On Sunday, August 18th, there will be a meeting at the Panhandle Animal Shelter. Kim Annis and Brad Stewart will be there from 10:00 – 12:00 pm. The Care Center will be having a Pet Parade on August 26th.

A thank you picture of Cooper who is blind and who was adopted by a family in Missoula was displayed.

The animal play yards need to be cleaned; shrubs, grass etc.

Corrine Wright will do chipping 8/20 from 5:00 – 8:00 at the shelter.

Eighteen cats will go to Flathead s/n on 8/20.

Dr. Disney will be at the shelter 8/23 we want to start spaying and neutering at 9:00 am.

KPFL needs more volunteers for Saturdays.

Blues Festival 8/9 – 8/10; sell water $197.00 and donation jug $16.00. There were lots of nice dogs on leashes.

New Business:

Carol McAllister met with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary to plan the menu for the 12th Annual Bow Wow Bash /Meow Mania Dinner and Auction. The meal will be pork, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, fruit salad, rolls and cake.

The BWB committee will have a meeting on August 26th.

The bills for October totaled $3,035.18 in operating costs, Bow Wow Bash meal and hall rental; also $1,827.25 for vet bills, mileage, chipping and clipper repair. Tami White made a motion to pay the October bills and Marge Sullivan 2nd the motion. The motion passed and the bills will be paid.

Shelter Report:

Tami White gave the shelter report. There are 8 dogs and 22 cats in the shelter and three kittens in foster care. Titan was adopted and Griz travelled to Second Chance in Bonners and was adopted. Dr. Disney will be at the shelter on 10/4 and 10/22. Cats will travel to Flathead S/N 10/22. At this time there are 25 slots availableCorrine Wright will be at the shelter 10/22 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Corrine will also do chipping on Saturday 10/26 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.

KPFL is still looking into someone to clean the shelter. The gentleman who cleans the Dome was contacted; his name is Alan. He will tour the shelter and make a decision for us.

Edwina did the painting on the kennel walls.
